Management of Cross Border Cooperation

The course Management of Cross Border Cooperation is delivered at masters (MA) level and enables the students to theoretically grasp the historical, theoretical and conceptual perspectives, as well key challenges, dilemmas and opportunities of cross border cooperation in Europe, with special emphasis on neighbouring regions to Slovenia.

The conceptual-theoretical approach of cross border cooperation is applied to tackle the course contents. Cross border cooperation is a process, which arises from the willingness to jointly address problems shared by communities and local authorities on different sides of a national borders, to overcome their “peripheral” positioning within the national government and governance systems to which they belong. Empirical evidence shows that cooperative approaches to border-related problems are one of the most efficient solutions to reduce the intensity of the so-called border effects.

 

The course enhances the students’ a) understanding of the significance of cross border cooperation and opportunities; b) ability to apply and combine the knowledge from different social science disciplines, as well as of different theoretical approaches, in understanding of issues related to the European democratic processes and community-led development; c) capability of operating in a multicultural environment in Europe, by understanding different regional and local environments; d) ability to anticipate and solve problems arising from cross border cooperation among European countries and from complex relationships between leaders and stakeholders on various levels of government.
