Spend a Day with a Local Leader
To enable communication between students, policymakers and EU regional policy professionals, with the purpose of mutual learning and exchange of experience, ideas, and to start planning future innovative projects special events "Spend a day with local leader" are organised.

This year's Europe Day in the company of the forceful and creative mayor of one of the fastest developing Slovenian municipalities, Mr. Alan Bukovnik, the long-time mayor of the Municipality of Radlje ob Dravi. Through the "Spend a day with a local leader" event, we highlighted the role of mayors and brought it closer to the students. We also wanted to raise awareness about the functioning of municipalities and their role in local development, and present examples of best practices in cross-border cooperation and citizen involvement in decision-making processes.

Mayor Stanko Ivanušič

This year's event "Spend a day with a local leader" showed life in the northeastern part of Slovenia - Prlekija. The mayor of Razkrižje (municipality with 1,250 inhabitants on an area of 10 km2), Mr. Stanko Ivanušič, described the challenges he faces in the border municipality, as well as the inspiring stories from his many years in office. He also emphasised the importance of cross-border cooperation and vividly presented an example of harmonious coexistence between the citizens of Razkrižje and the neighboring Municipality of Strigova, Croatia.

Mayor Nejc Smole

The traditional "Spend a day with a local leader" event took place in the Municipality of Medvode, where the consequences of last year's floods are still visible. The mayor explained how the reconstruction is progressing and what challenges they are facing. Mr. Nejc Smole, who was the youngest Slovenian mayor at the time of his first election, spoke about his experiences at the head of a municipality with more than 17,000 inhabitants, about the successes and interesting events during his ten-year term as mayor. He emphasised the importance of local awareness, which should be built up among children and later also among adults through local activities.
